CARIGNAN- Odette J.O. Carignan (née: Morin) July 23, 1925 – September 18, 2013. It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of their mother Odette Carignan. She was the younger of two daughters born to François and Marie Ange Morin. Odette was born and grew up in Ponteix. She took a secretarial course at Sacred Heart Academy and then worked as an assistant to her father, the postmaster general in Ponteix. She then worked in an office in Victoria, B.C. for a year. She returned to Ponteix and worked at the National Bank of Canada. On November 17, 1948, Odette married Gaston Carignan. The couple moved to a farm near Fife Lake where they raised their 4 oldest children. In 1957, they moved back to the family farm near Ponteix where they lived and raised their 8 children. Odette was a dedicated and fierce supporter of the French language and culture. She was president of the French radio station, the cultural association of Ponteix, and « les ainés de Ponteix ». She was instrumental in the establishment of the Francophone School in Ponteix. October 13, 1994, Odette received the prestigious honour “L’Ordre des Francophones d’Amérique”. Mrs. Carignan was a writer, author, and playwright. She published her first book at the age of 60. She went on to publish 5 other books, 3 of which are children’s books. She was especially proud of the fact that, at 86 years old, she published her last book. Odette wrote and directed many plays, recruiting family members as well as members of the community. Odette also was an artist. She painted many pictures depicting prairie scenes. In fact, she continued painting even after she was almost completely blind. Odette was a woman of values who was not afraid to defend them, whether or not it was popular. Her catholic faith, her French Canadian Heritage, rural Saskatchewan, and her family were values very dear to her. She promoted these values through her writing, her art, and her volunteer work on the many committees that she served throughout her life. These values, she tried to impart to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Odette was predeceased by her parents, François and Marie Ange Morin, and her husband Gaston. Left to cherish her memory and to carry on her legacy, her 8 children: Robert (Rosaline), Denis (Connie), René (Pat), Annette (Edmond) Douville, Jeanine (Gerald) Préfontaine, Daniel (Debbie), Madeleine, and Charles (Leanne); 20 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She also leaves her sister Suzanne McKinnon, numerous brother and sister inlaws and nieces and nephews. Funeral mass was celebrated by Father John Mock Monday, September 23 at 2:00 p.m. Odette was interred beside her beloved husband, Gaston, at the Notre Dame Cemetery in Ponteix.
