It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father Walter, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hopsital, surrounded by his family on Oct. 2, 2013.
Born Aug. 21, 1926 in Lingan, and a lifelong resident of New Waterford, he was a son of the late Walter and Annie (Ryley) Petrie.
Walter started working in the coal mines at an early age, eventually retiring from Devco. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and the men's club of Saint Agnes parish. His passions were many including skating, darts, swimming, camping and traveling. When Walter entered a room there was always much laughter and there are many people who can tell a Walter Petrie story. His children can relate to his repair methods and his determination to make things work. To Walter, nothing was broken that could not be mended and being very inventive, what was broken was generally repaired.
He is survived by his daughters, Patricia, Truro, Janet (Vernon) Lord, Washougal, WA; sons, Walter (Donna), Gerald (Darlene), of New Waterford; grandchildren, Carrie (Troy), Amanda (Barb), Kristin (Curly), Natasha, Jor-El, Riel, Nelson, Petra; great-grandchildren, Jarrin, Kaiden, Rylan, Benjamin, Emma, Sophie; brothers, Joseph (Agnes), Donnie (Monnie) and sister, Mary (Allie) MacKenzie.
Besides his parents Walter and Annie, he was predeceased by his wife, Christina (MacDonald); son, Dougie and brothers, Douglas and Lionel.
Visitation will be held today (Friday), Oct. 4 from 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Members of the Knights of Columbus will assemble at the funeral home Friday at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Saturday, Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment will be in Saint Agnes Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford.
Donations in his memory may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
