Donald Wesley Gray passed away peacefully with his family by his side on September 30, 2013 at the Wentworth Manor in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was born in Grayburn, Saskatchewan, on April 7, 1917. His parents, Archibald and Etta (Jerreat) Gray, had both immigrated with their families to Toronto, Canada from England, and moved out west to Saskatchewan along with many new homesteading families. Donald grew up outdoors, working on the farm and becoming a “jack-of-all-trades” which would prove to be a vital skill for the rest of his life’s work. In 1936 Donald entered Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills, Alberta, to prepare for ministry wherever God would lead him. During the summer of 1942, Don was sent by the Canadian Sunday School Mission to work in Buffalo Gap, Saskatchewan. There he met his wife-to-be, Christine (Teenie) Kjelbak and they became engaged after a lengthy ten-day courtship—a family record! They both attended Briercrest Bible Institute and were married August 31, 1943. Donald was also ordained as a minister with the Associated Gospel Churches of Canada. Following several years in the Davidson area pastorate, they sailed for Africa in 1949 to work with the Sudan Interior Mission in Ethiopia. From 1949 to 1977 they served in both southern and northwestern Ethiopia, engaging in true “pioneer” work in several remote areas. Don and Christine loved children; however they were unable to have their own; through God’s leading, in 1967 they adopted a baby girl, MaryAnne, in Moose Jaw. Following the Communist overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie, Teenie and Donald had to depart their beloved Ethiopia suddenly in 1977, returning to Canada to start anew, leaving behind everything they owned. Having previously completed his religious education degree, Donald turned to teaching and pastoral work full time. After ministering with SIM in Sokoto, Nigeria from 1978 to 1982, they retired to Three Hills, Alberta, where Donald continued to teach at Prairie High School, while MaryAnne finished high school and attended Prairie Bible College. Several years later, they moved “back home” to Moose Jaw, and finally to Caronport, SK. Teenie and Don were together at Chateau St. Michaels in Moose Jaw from 2006 until Christine’s passing in 2009. In 2010 Donald moved to Wentworth Manor, in Calgary, Alberta, to be closer to his daughter and two grandsons. Donald enjoyed playing the harmonica, singing, fellowship with others, listening to music, reading, woodworking, hiking and trekking via foot, horseback, motorcycle or car. Don was known for his sense of humour and always having a good joke at the ready. He had a special way of reaching out to anyone he encountered with his loving spirit and listening ear. Donald is fondly remembered for his calm, loving and prayerful spirit, sense of fun and adventure, love for family and friends, and most of all, his love for his Lord Jesus. Lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his daughter MaryAnne Camaiani, grandchildren Aslan Teva Satre Camaiani, and Dante Sebastian Camaiani, his much loved nieces and nephews, many grand-nieces, grand-nephews and their children, as well as many cousins and their families – all of whom he enjoyed so much and prayed for faithfully. Predeceased by his beloved wife Christine Kjelbak Gray, father Archibald, mother Henrietta, sister Esther, brother Edwin, sister Dorothy, brother Ken, sister Gladys, and other beloved extended family. The Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Moose Jaw Alliance Church (9th Ave. NW/Thatcher Dr.), at 1:30 pm. Reverend Carla Olsen officiating. Visitation for family and close friends will take place at W.J. Jones & Son Chapel, 106 Athabasca Street East, Moose Jaw, SK at 10:00 am. The burial will follow at 11:30 at the Caronport Cemetery.
