MATTHEWS, LAWRENCE WILLIAM - On Sunday, October 13, 2013, Lawrence W. Matthews passed away peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born July 4, 1934, he was the son of Charles and Jessie (Leonard) Matthews and beloved husband of ten years to Colleen, his wife and best friend. Larry was a machinist by trade, working for 40+ years for McAvity & Sons and retiring as a foreman. Larry loved to work with his hands, there wasn’t anything he couldn’t accomplish. He enjoyed gardening and all the little birds. He was a big Maple Leaf and Blue Jays fan and loved to hunt and fish. Larry’s greatest joy was his family. He loved them all so dearly. His jovial personality and his beautiful whistle will forever be remembered. Surviving in addition to his wife Colleen, are his children Greg (Gloria), Danny (Wayne), Kenny (Laurie) and Karen Dow (Jamie); “bonus kids” Joe McKay (Carrie), Tony McKay (Leighann), Debbie Fletcher (Wally), Cathy Smith (Mark), Barb McKay (Jay) and Susan McKay (Greg); 21 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; brother Russell Matthews and sisters Ann Osborne and Dorothy Vanderbeck, as well as many other extended family members. Along with his parents, Larry was also predeceased by his dear first wife of 38 years, Mary.
Arrangements entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 3 pm from Fundy Funeral Home Chapel. Interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery followed by a reception at the funeral home.
