It is with broken hearts that we regretfully announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and best friend, Hugh Francis Wade, at home, on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines on July 2, 1947, he was the youngest son of the late Michael and Annie (Steele) Wade.
In his early years, Dad worked in the Princess Mine alongside his father, and also sailed with Canada Steamship Lines for many years. Prior to his retirement from Devco, he worked in both the Lingan Mine and the Prince Mine, where he developed many life-long friends. For many years he could be found on the ball field coaching Little League teams. Dad had a love of sports, and spent much time sitting in front of the TV cheering for the New York Yankees or the Montreal Canadiens. He grew up with a love of music, and could be found with a guitar in hand. It was always a good time in the kitchen when Dad was playing his guitars or telling stories of the adventures of growing up in Cranberry. Most recently, he could be found walking along the Sydney Boardwalk with Mom at his side.
He is survived and will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 40 years, Linda (Merritt); his daughters, Kathy (Brian) McPhee, Howie Center, Cindy, Howie Center, and his sons, Michael (Shannon Young), Ft. McMurray, and Kevin, Sydney River. He is also survived by a special daughter, Tracey Wade, Sydney. He was the greatest Grampy ever to Jeremy and Jessica Wade, Ryan and Miranda McPhee, MJ Wade and Luke Anderson. Also surviving is his brother, Michael (Beverly) Wade, Sydney; brothers-in-law, Jack and Ken Merritt, both of Truro; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Dad will also be missed by his many close friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Beverly Sollazzo, brother-in-law, Jim Sollazzo, maternal and paternal grandparents, mother-in-law Agnes Merritt, and many aunts and uncles.
As per Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held today (Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013) from 7-9 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of dad’s life will take place on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Fr. Patrick O’Neill officiating. The burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com .
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the amazing staff of 4B at the Regional Hospital for their kindness and compassion given to Dad during his stay; to Dr. Doug Kohlsmith for his care over the years, to Dr. Rawal, Dr. Yolanda D’Intino, Dr. Shimone and all the doctors involved in Dad’s care during his recent illness. Also, a special thank you to the VON and the Palliative Care team for your care and guidance through this difficult time, you are all very special people.
Wherever a beautiful soul has lived, there is a trail of beautiful memories.
