Lawrence Joseph 'Lonnie' Bates, 87, died on Oct. 11, 2013, with his family by his side after a short stay at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, on Sept. 18, 1926, he was the son of the late Martin R. Bates of Louisbourg and Mary-Ann MacInnis of McAdam's Lake.
Growing up he enjoyed playing baseball and hockey and was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. His early working life began at the Sydney Steel Plant, and he later became the owner-operator of Dryden-Bates Insurance Company in Glace Bay. He was a member of the KOC for many years, being a 3rd degree member and former Grand Knight. As years went on, he enjoyed watching baseball and hockey on television, and always enjoyed drives in his car. He especially enjoyed visits from his young nieces and nephews, and will always be remembered for providing his assessment on matters of the day.
He is survived by his sister, Martina Andrea; his sister-in-law, Theresa Bates; his brother-in-law, Bob Hubbard; and many nephews and nieces.
Besides his parents, Martin and Mary Ann, he was also predeceased by siblings, Loretta (Lollie) Bates, Angus (Buster) Bates, Katie Bates, Carmel Hubbard and Leona Ciancio.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday, Oct. 15) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Requesting KOC members to meet at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. for prayers. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue in New Waterford with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial will be held in Mt. Carmel Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the KOC Hall, and all are welcome.
