George Goodwin McMillan

McMillan, George Goodwin, of West Tatamagouche, died Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the age of 89 in Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Tatamagouche. Born in Pugwash July 7, 1924 to Violet and Charlie McMillan. He spent his formative years in West Tatamagouche and retired there also. George volunteered at age 17 overseas in the air force during the Second World War, serving in England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. He returned home to operate a garage in Wallace, eventually moving into construction from BC to Ontario to the Maritimes. He retired as an operating engineer in high lift cranes. He was a proud life member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 65 years and supporter of the Bayhead Union Church. Our Dad loved telling stories but only of good times. He didn’t dwell on the past unless we are talking hymns. He was incredibly stoic about tough times and tough fights, including in the end, cancer. George is survived by his wife, Laura (Thompson) of 55 years; sons, Ronald (Patricia) and David (Julia); grandchildren, Benjamin, Rachel, Nicholas, Marina and Jillian; great-grandson, Gavin; cousins, Donald Parsons, Bolton, ON; Edna Cole, Tatamagouche; Alvin Foster, Halifax; Eldora Sutherland, Toney River and Erma Ursini, New York City. There will be visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 in Coulter’s Funeral Home, 48 Riverside Drive, Tatamagouche (657-3288). Funeral service will be held Sunday, October 20 at 2 p.m. in Bayhead Union Church, followed by interment in West Tatamagouche Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff of the Lilian Fraser Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to Bayhead Union Church or the Tatamagouche Branch Royal Canadian Legion General Revenue or Poppy Fund.
