KOURI: Mickey (Michael) Peter Kouri, age 63 of Swift Current, Saskatchewan passed away Sunday, November 3rd at Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current. Mickey was born in Mankota, SK on May 20, 1950 to parents Ernie and Ida (nee Coulombe) Kouri. Mickey attended school in Mankota and he started his first job as a young boy in his parent's grocery store - Kouri's Market. It was in the store where he first developed his friendly and helpful attitude toward others. He waited on customers, filled and carried out grocery orders, and unloaded trucks. After his high school years, Mickey remained in Mankota to work for his parents until their retirement in 1973. When the store was transferred to his brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Keitha, Mickey continued to work in the store until his health deteriorated in the early 80's. He moved to Swift Current to live with his parents and worked at OK Economy in the produce department and briefly in the music and camera department of Woolco. Mickey's main interest was music, and he couldn't get enough of it. He started collecting records when he 7 years old and never stopped. The number of items in his collection of 45's, 78's. LP's, cassettes, and CD's is well over the 10,000 mark. His taste ranged from Beatles to Bach and most genres in between. He provided music for family and friends, as well as, for many figure skating carnivals - no matter what the theme, he had appropriate music. Mickey was a naturally gifted musician; if he heard a song once, he could play it by ear on the piano. As a teenager, he was the keyboard player in the band called "The Marauders" that played for many local school dances. Mickey LOVED Christmas! So much so, that he started a collection of miniature ceramic houses completed with people, trees, fences, bridges, lamp posts, and interesting accessories. He loved to flip the switch and take people on his indoor Christmas light 'tour'. In addition to his music and ceramic house collections, Mickey collected comic books, ball caps, match box cars, and TV guides. Mickey was very knowledgeable (and passionate!) about history and politics. His TV, which remained on 24/7, was usually tuned into one of the world news channels. Documentaries, war history, and Rider games were among his favorites programs. Mickey was born with Cerebral Palsy; however, it did not keep him from doing most of the things in life he enjoyed. He never complained about his disability, and even during his four-month battle with cancer, he remained polite and offered many a 'thank you' to all his health-care professionals and care-givers. He was always grateful for everything he had and for what others gave to him. As many who knew him have said - "he was a sweetheart". Mickey is survived by: his brothers Alan (Keitha) Kouri of Mortlach SK, Jim Kouri of Swift Current SK, sister Dorothy Kouri of Swift Current SK; his nieces and nephews, Chris (Sherri-Lynn) Kouri of Moose Jaw SK, Corrina (Matt) Gates of Tofield AB, Carla Kouri of Regina SK, Kim (Patrick) DesRosiers of Banff AB, James (Melanie) McLeod of Strasbourg SK, Jennifer (Kevin) Kouri of Lethbridge AB, Kevin (Tierney) Kouri of Regina SK; his great nieces and great nephews, Kelton Kouri, Mackenzie Kouri, Mitchell Gates, Jackson Gates, Tyson DesRosiers, Taylor DesRosiers, and Jackson Corbin; his half-brothers Neil (Eileen) Peters of Medicine Hat AB, and Tony (Diana) Trautwein of Sherwood Park AB; and special friends Brenda Switzer and Mary Anderson of Swift Current. Mickey was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Ida Kouri, infant brother Joseph Kouri, sister-in-law Dawna Kouri, maternal grandmother Louise Coulombe and paternal grandparents Norman and Rose Kouri. The memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 12th at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall, with Lorraine Kehler, friend of the family, leading the service. Music was provided by Chris Kouri. The eulogy and readings were shared by Carla Kouri, Jennifer Kouri, and Kevin Kouri. A life tribute was given by Dorothy Kouri and Kim DesRosiers. Ushers were James McLeod and Kevin Kouri. Honorary Pallbearers are all who shared in Mickey's life. The interment at Memory Gardens will take place in the spring with immediate family attending.
