With heartfelt sadness we announce the recent death of Mary McPherson in Redondo Beach, Calif., in her 95th year.
Born in Dominion, she was the eldest child of the late Frank and Sarah Vassallo.
After completing high school, Mary studied nursing in Boston then returned to Cape Breton to start her career. In the early 1950s, she moved with her husband and two young sons to southern California where they settled. Years later, when others were thinking about retirement, Mary started university where she completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in sociology and behavioural science. Afterwards, she worked as a volunteer chaplain in several hospitals.
Mary will be missed immensely by her son, Paul and his wife Mary, with whom she resided; daughter-in-law, Delma; grandchildren, Tyson, Danielle and Sean and several great-grandchildren, all of California; brother, Greg Vassallo, Dartmouth; sister Patsy MacNeil, Dominion; many nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Mart, son, Martin, brothers, John, Frank, Iggie, Bernard and Earle, sister, Lorraine.
A funeral service will be held on Nov. 16 at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, Redondo Beach.
Mary was an amazing woman of faith who touched everyone she met with love and kindness.
