Hatfield, Verna Ellen – 91, of Amherst passed away peacefully on November 12, 2013 at Magnolia Continuing Care in Enfield. Born November 17, 1921 in Apple River, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Lillian (Crossman) Spicer. Following graduation from the Truro Provincial Normal College in 1942 she began her teaching career at the Apple River School. In 1944 she married her sweetheart the late Glendon Leslie Hatfield. In 1956 they moved their young family to Amherst, where she continued her teaching career at the Interprovincial School for the Deaf, Brookfield Elementary and Acadia Street Schools until her retirement in 1980. She was a dedicated teacher and followed the accomplishments of her students with great interest. Throughout her life she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her warmth, loving care and sense of fun enlivened any family gathering. As well as family times, she enjoyed attending card parties with friends, knitting, crocheting and preserving the produce from their garden.
