HAGSTROM-Joan (Laird) Hagstrom, age 76, passed away on November 12, 2013, at the Shaunavon Long term Care Centre. Joan was born in the Cedar Hill district of Lac Pelletier, SK on August 25, 1937, to Charles and Florence Laird, the last of thirteen children. Joan received her education at the Cedar Hill School and later took correspondence classes to upgrade to a high school level. In 1956 she started working at the Swift Current Union Hospital as a dietary aide in the cafeteria. In 1960, Joan married John (Jack) Wall. He was taken from her in an accident in 1961. Joan decided on a new career adventure and in 1962, attended Marvel hairdressing school in Winnipeg. Life brought her back to Swift Current and she ended up changing careers into retail. Joan was employed with the Southside Pioneer Co-op in the ladies wear department. During this time, she met her future husband, Gilbert Hagstrom. They were married in June of 1964 and remained in Swift Current. Joan became a mother in June of 1965 with a daughter, Heather, and again in May of 1970 with a son, Brent. She was a stay-at-home mom and raised her kids while Gilbert provided for the family. When the kids were closer to high school graduation, Joan decided to return to the work force and gained part-time employment with the Horseshoe Lodge banquet staff. She retired in September of 1999. She loved to cook, bake, sew and most of all gardening; it was one of her all-time hobbies. Joan always planted a big garden which yielded an abundance of fresh vegetables. This led her to spend countless hours in the kitchen during the weeks of late summer and early fall. Joan took pride in her flowers as well. Holidays and family time were very important to her. Mom loved to entertain and have people in for a meal, especially during holidays like Christmas and Easter. She loved to attend country gospel worship services both on Sunday evenings and monthly. Joan was a devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She always enjoyed the visits from her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Joan was predeceased by her loving husband, Gilbert in 1998; her sisters, Ida Belle (in infancy), Joyce (twin sister), Pauline Cassidy, Hilda Knippshild, Ellen Relke, Marion Ringdal, Norma Heyd, and Muriel Dyck; and her brothers, William and Donald. Joan is survived by her children Heather and Brent (Joanne) both of Swift Current; her grandchildren, Billy, Teyha, and Brock; her sisters, Mabel (Walter) Wall and Doris (Robert) Mackenzie; her brother, Roy (Marion) Laird; her brother-in-law, Ben (Hilda) Dyck; her sister-in-law Gloria (Donald) Laird; and many nieces and nephews. Joan’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Shaunavon Long-term Care Centre, who took excellent care of mom during her stay over the past five and a half years. She always spoke highly of the girls and the entertainment that she was able to enjoy on a weekly basis. As her health was failing, the weekly church services became more important to her as well. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 2:00 pm from the Community Baptist Church, Swift Current, SK, with Joell Haugan officiating. “In the Garden”, “Power in the Blood”, “Amazing Grace” and “I’ll Fly Away” were sung by the congregation and led by Glory Bound. Tributes were shared by Jennifer Dyck and Heather Hagstrom. The Interment Service was held at Mount Pleasant Burial Park, Swift Current, SK, with the following serving as pallbearers, Milton Dyck, Miles Dyck, Kevin Wall, Kelly Cassidy, Brian Reimer, and Bruno Garrecht. In memory of Joan Hagstrom, donations made to the Parkinson Society of Canada or the Shaunavon Long-term Care Auxillary would be appreciated by the family.
