It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George McKay Harvey on Friday, November 22, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer.
Born in New Waterford on November 24, 1938, George was the son of the late Charles and Georgina (Simpson) Harvey.
He spent his career employed with Environment Canada, where he worked as a meteorologist for 33 years, retiring in 1994. Throughout his life, George took an interest in agriculture and, at one time, was an active member of the Cape Breton Cattleman’s association. His passion was in harness racing; he was the owner/breeder/trainer of many standard race horses and spent many hours at various local race tracks, such as Tartan Downs, Northside Downs and Inverness Raceway.
George is survived by his wife, Elizabeth 'Betty'; son, William; daughter, Lynn; and his two treasured grandchildren, Matthew and Austin.
George was predeceased by his brothers, Andrew and Charles, and by his sisters, Harriet and Jean.
To honour George’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation and a private burial service will be arranged at a later date.
