It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Lena Patrick (Vickery), on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at the Northside Community Guest Home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Advocate Harbour, N.S., on Aug. 31, 1915, Mom was the daughter of the late Frank and Vertie Vickery, of Joggins, N.S. She was a faithful member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines.
Mum kept very busy with her many activities. She loved music, walking, fishing, playing cards and travelling. She belonged to the Carman United Church Choir for many years, and was also a member and Past Nobel Grand of Cann Rebekah Lodge, the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Legion Dart Club, Senior Citizens, Fun Band, and in earlier years, the Red Cross. She sold Avon for many years, and enjoyed chats and a cup of tea with all her customers.
Mom will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends who enjoyed her company and energy.
Lena is survived by her daughters, Marion Walker and Joyce Gardner (Clifford), Sydney Mines, Georgena Morris, Hamilton, Ont., Nancy McLellan (Kevin), Windsor, N.S., and Debbie MacMillan, (Neill), Hammonds Plains, N.S., and sons, Roy Patrick (Ev), Sydney Mines, and Gordon Shaw (Joyce), Chester, N.S. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was ‘Ole Nanny’ and ‘Granny Great’ to them all, and loved them with all her heart. She is also survived by her sister, Norma MacAloney (Bill), River Hebert.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband George, son Roger, granddaughter, Melissa MacMillan, brothers, Roy Vickery, Curtis Vickery, Graydon Vickery and Austen Vickery, and sister, Edna Campbell; sons-in-law, Frank Walker and Roger Morris.
Visitation for Lena Patrick will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, today (Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of her life will take place on Friday, at 11 a.m. in Carman United Church, Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. A reception will be held in the church hall, following the service. A private committal service will be held at a later date. Family flowers only.
