EBERG: Helen L. Eberg, age 92, passed away in Calgary on November 25, 2013. The Funeral Service was held Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 4:00 pm from the Chapel of Warren's Funeral Home with Captain Michael Ramsay officiating. The organist was Arlene Olson. The Soloist was Tim Smith and a Life Tribute was presented by Conrad Eberg. The interment service took place at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current. Lena or Helen was born at Flowing Well, SK on September 14, 1921 to proud parents Helena (Nee: Theissen) and David D. Leowen. Her mother passed away when she was just four years old and Helen went to live with her aunt Justina and uncle Frank Brown. At the same time her older brother David T. Leowen and her next younger sister Anne were sent to stay with their maternal grandmother and grandfather Theissen, while her youngest sister Tina was foster cared for at a farm near Neidpath by Bill and Susan Ens who renamed her Evelyn. Later on Helen was sent to live with her fraternal grandmother and aunt, Tina and Mary Loewen until the age of six, when she was taken in by her maternal grandparents because they lived near a village where there was a school. At the age of 12, Helen was taken out of school and she and her sister Anne moved back to live with her father David D. Loewen. When she reached the age of thirteen in September of 1934, she left home to find work. Helen, her sister Anne and a friend named Helen Lyding moved to Swift Current where they worked for a while as waitresses. Sometime later, Helen pinned a five dollar bill that she had received from her dad to the inside lining of her coat and travelled to Piapot, where she found work. Not long after, she and her sister Anne, went to work near Maple Creek. Helen worked at several places during this time, where she did outside farm chores such as milking cows, housekeeping and sewing work. On several occasions, when she was not paid after working for a month, she would move on to another job. At about the same time, her older brother David travelled to the west coast, where he found work near Surrey, B.C. Eventually, Helen began working for a couple named Berzosski near Maple Creek. After a short while, Mrs. Berzosski kindly offered to sponsor Helen so she could take a seamstress course that was being taught in Medicine Hat, AB. It was about this time that she met Joseph Eberg, who also began work at the Berzosski place. Helen and Joe were married in Medicine Hat on October 2, 1941. After they married, she and Joe moved to Sanctuary, where they did farm work during the summer for Mr. and Mrs. Peter McDonald. Each year after freeze up, they would move to a house in Albert Park in Swift Current, where Joe worked during the winter and Helen looked after her sick sister-in-law Jenny (Nee:Austring) Eberg. In April, 1943 a son, Conrad was born at Sanctuary, SK. Then in August 1944 a second son Ordeen was born in Tuberose, SK in May 1945, Helen her husband and two young sons moved to the Eberg family farm in the Cedar Hills District south of Swift Current, In August 1946, a daughter Patricia was born at the Swift Current Union Hospital. In October of 1962, Helen moved to Swift Current where she rented a house at 519 Central Ave. from Mrs. Daum before moving to her sister Anne's house where she lived from April 1963 until October 1964. She then rented a suite from Mr. Beisel and continued to work in Swift Current until August of 1969, when she moved to Calgary. Helen worked for the Bowcrest Nursing Home in Calgary until the late fall of 1969, when she began making custom draperies at the Eaton's Warehouse. In 1971, she began doing alterations for the Eaton's Department Store in downtown Calgary, where she worked until retiring on September 30, 1986. Helen bought a house on 18th Ave. North West in Calgary in 1972, where she lived until June 30, 2009, when she sold her house and moved in with her son, Ordeen. On July 12, 2013, she was taken to Foothills Hospital in Calgary for treatment for Non-Hogken's Lymphoma, before being discharged on September 25. She continued living with her son until November 14, when she was taken for treatment to the South Health Campus in Calgary. It was there that Helen passed away at 5:38 am on November 25, 2013. Helen is survived by her sons, Conrad and Ordeen, her daughter Patricia, her son-in-law Robert Banman, three grand daughters, Barbara Banman, Roberta (Nee: Banman) and Caralene (Nee; Eberg) Cicconi, one grandson Gregory Banman, one grand son-in-law Russel Raybould, three great grandchildren Robert, Matthew and Elizabeth Raybould, her uncle Jake Thiessen of Mission, B.C. and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Helena (1925) and David D. Loewen (May, 1943), her husband Joseph Almer Eberg (July 1983), her sister Evelyn Ens (July 26, 1993), her brother David T Loewen (2002), her sister Anne (2012) and numerous aunts uncles and cousins. She will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by her family and friends. In her memory, memorial donation may be made to the Charity of the Donors Choice.
