It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Nelson Earl Latimer on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Arichat, Isle Madame, he was the son of the late Charles and Augusta (MacArthur) Latimer.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Hazel (Leblanc) Latimer and his five children, Wayne (Muriel), Jody (Joe) Flynn, Karen (Mark) Drisdelle, Tamara (Tracy Riley) and Lori-Anne (Jason) Merlin. He will be greatly missed by his 11 grandchildren, Devon, Jessica and Emily Latimer; Meaghan (Trevor) Mossman, Aaron and Alyssa Flynn; Brittany, Tyler and Jordan Drisdelle; Ethan and Chase Merlin. Surviving siblings are June Oliver, Port Hawkesbury and Arthur 'Artie'(Geraldine), Arichat. Also surviving are many loved nieces and nephews. He will be sorrowfully missed by his many, many friends.
Predeceased by sisters, Marion and Shirley Mae and brother, Kenneth 'Buddy' (Bea).
Nelson was an elder and member of St. George’s Anglican Church. Having graduated top of his class from trade school receiving his carpentry certificate, he was employed with Municipal Ready Mix (1957-1970). In 1970, he became a co-founder of Joneljim Concrete Construction Ltd. Nelson has contributed to the development, enrichment and success of Cape Breton Island throughout his many business endeavours with Stephens Building Supplies, Don Ray Lumber, Donavan’s, Rona Arichat, and Sydney Millwork. Nelson was honoured to be inducted into the Cape Breton Hall of Fame in 2009. He was a generous man, quietly helping out many non-profit organizations, individuals, and families in need. He lived by his motto that “If you keep your sleeves rolled up, you’ll never lose your shirt.” This speaks to his driven work ethic. Nelson believed and practiced the three C’s. “People need to be capable, connected and to contribute. With this combination, you’ll only have success.” Nelson was a devoted family man and was an inspiration to his children and grandchildren. He was a true gentleman, who instilled in his family, values of hard work, modesty, and generosity. He was an avid skier, traveller, and golfer, achieving his third “Hole in One” at the Lakes Golf Course in October, just weeks before entering hospital.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital ICU. Special thanks to Dr. Harless, Dr. Myatt and Janice Black.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ the King at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, with Rev. Laura McCue officiating.
Memorial donations can be made to Camp Breton Dean or a charity of your choice.
The last question we ask ourselves when we leave this world is, “Did I make a difference?” Nelson Latimer made a difference.
