JONES, ROBERT "BOB" - Robert "Bob" Gibson Jones of Hampton, husband of Blanche (Hasson) Jones passed away December 8, 2013 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Berry Mills, New Brunswick on February 22, 1923 he was the son of the late Guy and Bridget (Sullivan) Jones. In additional to his wife of thirty eight years, Bob is survived by his daughters; Jean Vicars of Ontario and Judy Jones of Saint John; son, Robert (Sue) Jones of Grand Cayman; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; sisters Gladys Lutes of Moncton and Alice Wheaton of Petitidociac, as well as, several nieces and nephews. Bob was pre-deceased by his brother Everett Jones and his sisters, Catherine Hicks and Lena Wheaton. Robert was dedicated in service to his country, community and family. Robert served five and half years with the 14th Field Ambulance in England, France, Belgium and Holland during WWII. In 1984 he retired from NB Worker’s Compensation Board, after serving thirty five years of which he was Chairman for twenty seven years. He then became Commissioner of Canada Pension Commission with Veterans Affairs Canada until 1993. Robert retired to the town of Hampton, NB where he was active in Hampton Branch #28 and served as Service Officer and was Chairman of the Restoration of the Cenotaph at Veteran’s Park. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a serving member for 56 years. Bob also served as President of Saint John Branch #14, District Commander of Saint John District, Provincial President of NB Command and Treasurer of Dominion Command for 20 years. Robert served as Vice President and Treasurer on Saint John Regional Hospital Board; he also served as Director of the foundation for the Dr. V.A. Snow Foundation. He was the NCO of the Byng Boys Club; served four terms as President of Worker’s Compensation Board Association of Canada; Vice President of the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions. He was Vice President of the Canadian Safety Council. He was Vice President for the St. John Ambulance – NB Division and was founder and Past President of the NB Paraplegic Association. He was also Honorary Member of Balls Lake Fishing Club. Bob was recognized in 2012 with The Governor General of Canada, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award. He also was the Commander of Order of St. John Ambulance and served on the board. He was recipient of the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation. Bob was an avid fisherman, having enjoyed several trips to the Arctic. He loved the freedom and peacefulness along the banks of the Miramichi with close fishing pals, his beloved wife Blanche and both dogs Sandy and Rusty. He was a member of the Hampton United Church and former member of the Hampton Curling Club.
Visitation will take place at Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB, with visiting on Thursday from 3 to 8 PM. A Memorial service, conducted by Rev. Kelly Hudson-Lewis, will be held from Hampton United Church at 11:00 AM, on Friday, December 13, 2013. There will be a reception following the service in the church hall.
