Katherine Mae “Kay” Read
1925-2013
Katherine Mae "Kay" Read, age 88, passed away on Monday, December 9, 2013 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center. Born in Maccan she was the daughter of the late Irvin and Elizabeth (Smith) Boss.
Kay was a graduate of Amherst Senior High and St. Charles Commercial School and was Valedictorian at both Graduation Ceremonies. She was employed for several years as a medical record Clerk at Highland View Hospital and later as a Secretary for Canada Post, Amherst, retiring in 1986. She was a member of Trinity St. Stephen's United Church and a former member of the UCW. In earlier years Kay volunteered as secretary for Children's Aid Society and the Cumberland School Board. She enjoyed traveling, reading and playing bridge.
She is survived by daughters; Gwen McFadden, Amherst, and Dr. Nancy Read (Dr. Chris Watling), London, ON; son David (Shannon), Canning, NS; sister Evelyn Lane, Amherst, and brother, Gordon Boss, Maccan; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Alison, Craig, Ashleigh, Emily, Allison, Meghan, Fiona, and Ian, and 2 great grandchildren, Kristopher and Liam; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Layton Read in 1983 and a great granddaughter Eve Rebecca McFadden.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (667-8777). Friends and family are invited to a time of visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 2 pm at the funeral home, Rev. Carolyn MacLeod officiating. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Kay may do so to The Four Fathers Memorial Library or a charity of choice.
