John 'Jock' Crosby
Born In: Dominion
Passed on: December 19th, 2013
Our beloved Jockey died peacefully with Hawley and Elizabeth by his side on Dec. 19, 2013, after a brief illness, at the age of 87.
Born in Dominion, N.S., he was the son of Andrew and Bridget (Graham) Crosby. He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1950, and throughout his life demonstrated the kindness and caring of that profession. He had a 32-year career with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs in Sydney, and was a devoted advocate for those he served in that role.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (nee Hawley); his only daughter, Hawley, her husband Tom Smith, and his darling granddaughter, Olivia Smith. He was the favourite uncle of many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his grandson, John Smith. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, predeceased by sisters, Margie McEachern, Annie Stephens and Katie McLeod and brothers, Adam, Graham, and Bobby.
He was the heart of the Crosby and Hawley families, always interested, ready to lend a sympathetic ear, to share a laugh or a drink. He was a gentle and humble soul, but full of mischief. “Who has more fun than people” was his motto.
His family is grateful to staff of the Glace Bay General Hospital for their tender care in his final weeks.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Curry’s Funeral Home, Main Street, Glace Bay. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014. A celebration of Jock’s life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay.
Donations in his memory may be made to Feed Nova Scotia or a charity of one’s choice.
