Norman King

KING, Norman Blair “Norm” - 86, Bible Hill, passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2013, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born August 27, 1927, in Toronto, Ontario, he was “the son of a gun”, in more ways than one, to the late William “Blair” and Hazel (Sinclair) King. At age five, Norm lived with friends and family in Collingwood and Debert. The young Norm was known as “Tim Buck”, a nickname bestowed upon him by his Uncle Eddie McLellan (Aunt Ellie (King)) who saw the very determined man with a mind and will of his own in ways that people could appreciate. With the help of his Uncle Eddie, Norm purchased his first truck at age 17. As Eddie said, “If body fill was worth anything, Norm had a fortune in that truck.” Not afraid of hard work and a no putter-off-er of what had to be done, through adverse early years, Norm realized he couldn’t make a living in Nova Scotia. A trucker by choice, at age 22 he moved to Whitehorse, Yukon. Norm was an achiever and eventually started a trucking company, Kluane Freight Lines, with his son, Wayne, and always a helping hand from friend Allan Gee. After 40 years of trucking in the Yukon, then working for his friend Glenn Mickey, Norm retired to Nova Scotia. With quick witted humour, Norm always had a word to say; good or bad, it had to be said. Along with his parents, Norm was predeceased by his second wife, Ethel MacEachern; sisters, Audrey King, Bernice Berry; brother, Don King; half-sisters, Ola May Teed, Julianna Watford. Norm is survived by his first wife and mother of his children, Josephine (VanBuskirk) Goring; son, Wayne (Lynette); daughters, Terry (Dale) Kinney, Linda Ticiniski, all of Whitehorse; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; step children, Sheila (Frank) Sims, Blair MacEachern; several nieces and nephews; his companion of the last 12 years, Edith (Mills) Leadbetter. Honouring Norm’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation of service. If so desired, donations in Norm’s memory to Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation or a charity of choice are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Norm’s obituary on-line and selecting “Send A Condolence” at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com

In his daughter’s words, “A man bigger than life.”
