SPURR, James Bernard (Bernie) - At age 92, Bernie left us on December 27, 2013 after a short illness. Bernie was born in Round Hill, Annapolis County on March 24, 1921, the only child of James and Hazel (Rice) Spurr. He grew up on the family farm at Carleton Corner, near Bridgetown, where he attended school and lived the idyllic life of a boy during those times, usually in the company of his dog, hunting and fishing and enjoying the freedoms nature had to offer. Despite an exemption from military service as an only child living on the family farm, Bernie answered his call to duty, joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and serving overseas during World War II from the base at Odiham, England. Following the War, Bernie made the RCAF his career, serving in Canada's north and across the country, including Port Hardy, British Columbia, Norman Wells, NWT, Chatham, New Brunswick, Parent, Quebec, Sea Island (Vancouver), British Columbia, Rivers, Manitoba and, finally, Halifax, where he retired in 1976 with the rank of Major. Following his career in the RCAF, Bernie returned to the family farm at Carleton Corner, taking over its operation from his parents, and enjoying a long and fulfilling retirement, much of it spent in the fields, on a tractor or up an apple tree. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 63 years, Rita (Dignam) Spurr, their only child, James (Valerie) of Halifax, and his two granddaughters, Kate (Chad), Calgary and Alison (Kevin), Halifax. In keeping with Bernie's wishes his remains have been cremated and there will be no service. A reception for family and friends in celebration of his life will be held at a later date. We wish to thank the many caregivers who supported Bernie during his declining health. They include Kathy Mosher, who provided her kindness as well as in-home care for Bernie in Bridgetown before he was hospitalized.
