Evelyn Barton (nee Spears)
Passed on: January 9th, 2014
It is with sadness that the family of Evelyn Barton (nee Speers) announce her passing on January 9th 2014. Evelyn was born on November 22, 1930 in Parry Sound Ontario. She grew up in the Northern Ontario towns of Franz, Sultan and Cartier with her parents Tom and Eva and her sisters Dorothy and Carol. Her family was very musical and Evelyn grew up playing and singing music with her parents and sisters. She passed her passion for music onto her children. The family would spend summer vacations with her Uncle Vernon's family at Wasaga beach and it was at Uncle Vernon's drugstore in Toronto where she met the love of her life Don Barton who was working there as a pharmacist's assistant in 1951. Evelyn attended Nurses College at St.Michael's hospital. After her graduation, Don and Evelyn were married in Toronto and had their first son Tom. They moved to the United States where Don pursued graduate studies in Chemistry. They had their second son Greg while Don completed his PhD and taught at University of Buffalo, University of Michigan, University of Illinois, and Purdue University. In the early sixties Don, Evelyn and their young family moved to St. John's, Newfoundland where Don would teach Chemistry at the newly expanded Memorial University of Newfoundland. Evelyn spent the next 40 years in Newfoundland and it was there she discovered another great passion, community nursing. She worked for the Victorian Order of Nurses in St. John's, and eventually started and ran her own home nursing business for many years. At Christmas the Barton house would be inundated with cards and gifts from people she had helped in the community. In Newfoundland, Don and Evelyn added two more boys to their family, Charles and Robin. In 2002 Don and Evelyn retired to Cambray, Ontario to be closer to their family, and in 2003 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In her final year Evelyn lived in Whitby Ontario at the Taunton Mills retirement residence where she greatly enjoyed the friendships made participating in the many activities offered there. Evelyn is predeceased by her husband Don and survived by, sons Tom (Nancy), Greg (Colette), Charles (Jennifer) and Robin (Marcia), sisters Dorothy Lengyel (George deceased), and Carol Ricci (Roger), grandchildren William (Vanesa), Lindsay, Michael, Samantha, James, Ethan and Brendan, great granddaughter Dalia, brother-in-law Bruce (Isabel) and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and special friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (http://www.heartandstroke.com), or to a charity of choice, would be gratefully appreciated. A service for Evelyn will be held at Mount Lawn Memorial Gardens and Reception Center, 21 Garrard Road in Whitby, Ontario on Sunday January 12th at 11:30am with reception to follow.
