Doris Greta (Ward) Rand - 86, of Lower Church Street, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 10, 2014 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Centreville, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Randall and Gertrude (Fielding) Ward. She graduated from Kings County Academy at the age of 16 and later attended Mack Business College. In 1948, she graduated from the Nursing Program at the Grace Maternity Hospital. She nursed at both the Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital, Wolfville and the Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital, Kentville and was a well-known maternity and pediatric nurse. She had a passion for delivering babies and caring for children. She enjoyed rug hooking and was a founding member of the Spinners Rug Hooking Group. She also enjoyed knitting, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and had a love for animals, especially dogs. She is survived by four daughters, Ruth (Wayne) Gavel, Kentville; Carolyn (Robert) Rowe, Nicholsville; Barbara (George) West, Lower Church Street; Sharon Rand, New Minas; three sons, Stephen (Jackie), Lower Church Street; Richard (Jeanita), Lower Church Street; Greg (Pansy), Lower Canard; 19 grandchildren, Brian (Danielle) Gavel, Roger (Carrie) Gavel, Scott (Lisa) Gavel, Jennifer (Mitchell) Visser, Leonard (Rebecca) Rand, Peter (Candice) Rand, Melissa (Eric) Foster, Patrick (Meghan) Rand, Matthew (Heather) Rowe, Daniel (Sam) Rowe, Jon (Allie) Rowe, Andrew (Denise) Rowe, Hugh West, Martha (Randy) Dill, Rachel (Ryan) Kennedy, Andrea West, Elaine (Chris) Eveleigh, Emma Rand and Jason Rand; 30 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 45 years, Hugh E. Rand; three sisters, Freda, Marion and Dorothy; three brothers, Robert, Murray and Barry. Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2014 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Elizabeth Johnson officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the Fox Hill Cemetery, Lower Church Street. Donations in memory may be made to the Fox Hill Cemetery or the Valley Hospice Foundation.
