Harold McGrath

McGRATH, HAROLD ST. CLAIR - Harold St. Clair McGrath of Serenacare, passed away peacefully at his residence on January 13, 2014 at the age of 94. He was the devoted husband of 63 years to Helen (Moriarty), who predeceased him in 2006. Much loved by his family, he was father of Bill, Mary Lynn, Elizabeth (Don Downing), Edward (Marlene Richard), Marian (Alan (Jake) Blair). Proud grandfather of Jennifer (Brian Kent), Melody (Matthew Taylor), Stephanie(Glen Halfyard), Erin (Christopher Brauer), Patrick McGrath, Patrick Downing, Stephen (Denise Malyk), Karen (Stephen Muir), Jessica and Alexandra; and great grandfather of Brennan, Connor, Emily, Clare, Ellie, Chloe and a new infant great grandson expected within days. Dear companion to his sweetheart, Mabel Goguen. Cherished brother of Joan Walsh; predeceased by his sister Constance Baird, and brothers, Edward, Gregory and Francis. Harold was born in Pictou, N.S., the son of Edward and Mary Gertrude (O’Toole) McGrath. As a young man, he lived in Halifax where he met Helen and graduated from St. Mary`s University in 1941. He served in the Canadian Army in WW II. He was a pharmaceutical representative for F.W. Horner Ltd, for nearly 30 years, in Moncton, where the family lived in Sunny Brae, Fredericton and Ottawa. He was an active member of the United Commercial Travelers (UCT) and the Knights of Columbus. Fun-loving and full of mirth, he was well loved by his nieces and nephews, and his many friends, especially those at the Camden Park Terrace and Peoples Park Tower. Well into his “nineties”, he was committed to caring for others and to community events, such as the annual Christmas turkey drive, and thoroughly enjoyed a game of pool, dancing with Mabel, concerts, and exercise classes. Harold found the most joy being with his family. He was the “life of the party”. The family are thankful for the kindness shown by the staff of Peoples Park Tower and Camden Park Terrace, and to the staff of Serenacare where he was residing, and to Dr. Jamie Stewart and Dr. Greg Donald for their compassionate care.
