DOW (Carmichael), Jean Ormiston "Ormi" - age 90, Berwick, Kings Co., died in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, amidst her family on Saturday, January 18, 2014. Ormi was born on April 9, 1923, in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, to the late Arthur Rae and Edith Thelma (Ormiston) Carmichael. Moving to Hartford, Conn., with her parents in 1924, and later returning to Glace Bay to live with her grandparents John & Eliza Ormiston in 1928. Graduating from Glace Bay High in 1941, Ormi worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia in Glace Bay. In 1944, an RCAF Airman arrived in Glace Bay and swept her off her feet. She and Randy married within two months and remained together for over 68 years. In 1957, Randy was posted to Parent, Quebec, and he and Ormi set off with three children for the north. While there, she worked as an agent for North American Fashion Frocks. Ormi and Randy continued their involvement in community theatre, a passion they shared for most of their lives. She also hosted a radio show for children on the local radio station. While in Quebec, their three children increased to five. In 1961, they returned to Nova Scotia, with a posting to Greenwood. Randy and Ormi settled in Berwick. They were quietly active in their communities, especially passionate about working with and educating young people. They started the HiC young peoples group in the Berwick United Church in the 1960s. She and Randy were founders of the Berwick Community Theatre and Ormi served as Secretary, actress, and director. She worked for the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, the Bank of Nova Scotia in Aylesford and finished out her work life at the Royal Bank of Canada in Berwick. Following retirement, Ormi volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels, until she was over 80. She is survived by son, John Dow, Berwick; daughter, Diane Dow, Shubenacadie; daughter, Pamela (Stephen) Cameron, Lower Sackville, and sons, Adam, Robin and Christopher Misner; son, Eric (Vanda) Dow, Coldbrook, and their sons, Tyler and Todd; son, David (Michelle) Dow, Comeauville, and their two sons, Alexandre and Eric; her half-sister, Sandi (Nick) Twerdy, Conn.; half-brother, Douglas (Esther) George, California and their families. Besides her parents, Ormi was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Rankine Burns “Randy” Dow; her mother and step-father, Edith (Ormiston) (Carmichael) and Raymond George; her father and step-mother, Rae and Gertrude (Rida) Carmichael; a sister, Willette Carmichael; a brother, John Carmichael; a half-sister, Carol George; a granddaughter, Kami Lynn Misner. There will be visitation from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m., Friday, in the Berwick United Church, 240 Commercial St., Berwick, from where the funeral service will take place in the church at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, January 25. Rev. Tom Woods officiating, with a time of fellowship and remembrance following in the church hall. Interment will be in the Berwick Cemetery, at a later date. Family flowers only, donations in her memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation, Kentville, Grand View Manor, Berwick, or a charity of your choice.
