Sarah Evelyn (Miles) McDonald slipped quietly away on Feb 18, 2014, with her loving family and granddaughter, Janelle, by her side.
Evelyn was born in Birch Grove on May 31, 1928.
Evelyn was best known for her love of music. She grew up on Lake Road in Glace Bay in a house always filled with music. Her father and mother were both musicians and instilled this love in all their six children. Weekends "Out Home" were a time when family and friends gathered, played music, sang, and enjoyed an abundance of great food.
Evelyn played the piano in a band called "Revellers", along with her brother Bea. She was organist and choir director at Holy Cross Church for over 30 years. She also played the piano for the ATV Show "Marjorie the Music Lady" for 12 years. She was a member and piano player for Coal Town Chorus.
Her family was exceptionally proud of her when she graduated from University College of Cape Breton with a diploma in Religious Education in 1991.
Evelyn was predeceased by her father, William B. Miles; mother, Marjorie Elizabeth (Hillier) Miles; husband John R "Sharkey" McDonald, brothers John (Hilda) Miles, and Gus Miles, sister Mary "Mamie" Miles and brother in law Edward MacLeod.
She is survived by her loving and care giver brother William "Bea" Miles and her loving sister Joan MacLeod. Her devoted and loving daughter Marjorie (Louis) Fougere, grandchildren Jenet Campbell, Janelle (Jeff) Osborne, Michelle (Leo) Cormier, and Rene Fougere. Great grandchildren Isabella and Logan Osborne, Campbell Delaney, Danielle and Renee Cormier. Her many nieces and nephews, especially Bill and Gloria Miles who were never farther than a phone call away, and great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ley, Dr. Rose MacKay, and the nurses and doctors of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Emergency Room who made her last moments peaceful.
Visitation on Friday, Feb. 21 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 22, 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church.
