BECKER, Diane Marie
August 16, 1942 – Herbert, SK
February 24, 2014 – Calgary, AB
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Diane Marie Becker (Shygera, Masson) after a lengthy battle with COPD. Diane passed away quietly on February 24, 2014 at the age of 71 years, at home in the Prince of Peace Manor, Calgary, Alberta.
Born in Herbert, Saskatchewan on August 16, 1942, she grew up on the farm with her family enjoying pastimes of riding horses, driving tractors, curling, and baseball. She always told us how she was such a tomboy, that wearing dresses to school actually was too difficult. One particular refusal even had the school contacting her parents to try to keep her in line! Diane grew up to love curling and participated every year for most of her adult life. She had many trophies and memories to celebrate all of her successes. As a young lady, Diane had left home to work as a telephone operator in Sceptre, Saskatchewan. After that time, she went on to get married and raise her children. Once her children were grown, Diane went back to work in Swift Current, then on to Banff, Alberta, eventually getting a job at the hospital. This led to an adventure of a lifetime when she was hired to work in a hospital in Saudi Arabia. She spent four years in Rhiyad, which also gave her the chance to do some travelling to other surrounding countries. When she moved back to Canada, Diane spent most of her time surrounded by her family and her grandchildren. She never tired of the games and fun the grandchildren brought into her life; they were truly the light of her life.
Diane will be lovingly remembered by her children, Terry, Shelly, Lana (Barry Magdalin) and Randy Masson (Maritess); her grandchildren, Brock Smith (Michelle Somarriba), Braden Smith, Carlie Chenard (PJ Barr), Samantha Chenard (Matt Bottolfs), and Emily Masson; her brothers Don Shygera (Darlene) and Brian Shygera (Jennifer); sister-in-law Elsie Shygera; brother-in-law Pete Driedger; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Diane was predeceased by a sister in infancy, her parents Mary and Harry Shygera, her sister Louise Driedger, and her brother Jerry Shygera. Diane’s kindness, generosity, strength and compassion will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
