Ernest Arthur Barnes

87 of Waverley, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully at the VG site, QEII Hospital in Halifax, NS on March 1st, 2014, one month before his 88th birthday after a short battle with cancer. He is predeceased by his loving wife Mary Ann (Miller). Born in St John's, NL, on March 30, 1926, he was the son of the later Walter J. Barnes and Gladys (Peters) Barnes. Ernie started his career with Transport Canada in Goose Bay, Labrador, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was the local Sheriff above his mechanic duties with DOT. He later transferred to Waverley, NS to work at the Halifax airport (Stanfield International Airport) in 1959. He retired as the Airport Assistant Manager in 1982, after 37 years in the federal government. Upon his retirement a road which he had constructed on the airport was renamed "Barnes Drive". He was very appreciative of his friends near his home in Waverley, and would always say he had excellent neighbors. His family was very special to him and he enjoyed all the family occasions, and traveling to the valley for hay with his son-in-law Peter. Over the years Ernie was very independent and active, and enjoyed driving his car on an almost daily basis. His car was very special to him until he lost his license two years ago. His is survived by sons Robert (Marta) of Branch LaHave, Donald (Carmie) of Dartmouth, daughter Judith Davidson (Peter) of Mount Uniacke, and step daughter Mildred Howell of Paradise, NL, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister Daphne Conlin of Vancouver, BC, and brother Wallace Barnes of Manuels, NL. Funeral service will be held at a later time. A further announcement on details will follow. Burial will take place in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Sackville, NS. Special thank you to the doctors, nurses, care workers at the VG Hospital for their kindness and the excellent health care they provided.
