Theresa (Tess) Martin

Passed on: March 5th, 2014

January 26, 1928 - March 5, 2014 - In the warm embrace of her children, Theresa Margaret (Tess) Martin of St. John's passed peacefully away on March 5, 2014. Born the 7th of 9 children of Patrick and Isabelle Connors, Tess lived a full and rich life in which she cherished the role of mother and her 57 years of marriage to Max Martin, who predeceased her in 2008. She will be remembered and ever loved by her five children: Anne (Ralph Matthews) of Vancouver; Paul (Heather Baker) of Vancouver; Susan of St. John's; Greg (Joyce Penney) of Paradise and Gander; and Jennifer (Alan Kearley) of Calgary; four grandchildren: Stephanie Martin, Vancouver; Andrew Martin (Sally), Halifax; Adam Matthews, Chicago; and Leah Matthews, Toronto; great-granddaughter Sophie Martin, Halifax; sister, Rita Fitzgerald (Edward), St. John's; and by many special nephews and nieces. Tess was active in the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Clare's Mercy Hospital for many years. She was an avid gardener, especially proud of the trees and flowers on the Roche Street property where she and Max raised their family; and a true lover of the beauties of the natural world. A great seamstress, she contributed to the costumes for many theatre productions in the founding years of St. Pius X Parish and Gonzaga High School. She will be fondly remembered by the "NISE" girls, by the many caring staff of Eastern Health who ably assisted Susan in her devoted care for Tess in her later years, and by her two furry friends Mollie and Macy. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home. Visitation Hours: Thursday, March 6th, 7 - 9pm; and Friday, March 7th, 1 - 3pm and 6 - 8pm. Funeral service on Saturday, March 8th at 9:30am at St. Pius X Church, Smithville Crescent. Cremation to follow, with a private burial service at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Tess' memory can be made to the St. John's SPCA or to a charity of one's choice.
