McCARTHY, GEORGE DUKE - George D. McCarthy, 91, of Moncton, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Friday, March 7, 2014. Born in Quispamsis, on September 29, 1922, he was the son of the late Dennis J. and Margaret (Fitzmaurice) McCarthy. George was a machinist in the CNR shops for 43 years, retiring in 1983. He attended St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, L7910. He was also a member of the Catholic Information Center, Moncton Legion Branch #6, CNR War Vets, MCA Curling Club and Country Meadows Golf Club. He served overseas in the Canadian Army’s RCEME Corp., 1942-1946. Wounded twice, he was involved in one of the War’s secret arms development projects known as “Operation Land Mattress”; a multiple rocket launcher weapon. Upon successful completion, he served in the 1st Canadian Rocket Unit. He was discharged in 1946 having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, the former Gertrude Carrigan; daughter, Mrs. Fran Robichaud (Rob); son, Bill McCarthy (Nancy); son-in-law, Ken MacQuarrie (Anne Marie); grandchildren, Sandy, Greg and Janet, Jamie, Patricia and Michael, Aaron, Ethan, Amos and Kaelen; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Hoover of Detroit, USA and many nephews and nieces. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by daughters, Mary McCarthy, Donna MacQuarrie; brothers, James McCarthy, Father Joseph McCarthy, Monsiegnor John McCarthy, Justin McCarthy and sisters, Jean MacMillan and Florence Grey
Resting at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Moncton Legion Branch #6 Memorial Service Wednesday at 4:00 pm. Funeral Mass to be celebrated at St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church (43 Botsford St.) on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 9:30 am with Rev. Allison Carroll officiating. Reception following the mass. Interment, Elmwood Cemetery in the spring. If so desired, donations in George’s memory can be made to St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church or to a memorial of donor’s choice.
