It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of John 'Bunty' Duprey, 75, of New Waterford on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at New Waterford Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late John Baptiste and Cesarine (Lalo) Duprey.
John was a member of Mount Carmel Church, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard, New Waterford. In earlier years he was employed with Devco before moving on to become a skilled welder and pipefitter. He was a member of the Pipefitter's Union, Local 682 and worked locally before moving to Brantford, Ont., where he continued his employment with this trade. He travelled and worked as a pipefitter/welder for several years throughout Ontario before eventually moving home to Inverness, Cape Breton. John loved sports, namely baseball, hockey and boxing. In younger years he was a competitive boxer on the local ticket and was known to his opponents and fans as 'Rock-A-Bye Baby'. John will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Surviving are his daughter, Donalda (Tommy) Abadie, Jackson, Louisiana, U.S.A.; son, Joe (Sue), Timmons, Ont.; brother, Charles, New Waterford; sister, Helen (John) Ladouceur, New Brunswick; grandchildren, Jacob and Heather; many nieces, nephews, friends, cousins, and special cousin, John Melvin Angione.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (MacIsaac) 'Blossom' Duprey, son, Charles Patrick 'Chuck' Duprey, brothers, Andrew, Albert and Freddy.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Friday, March 14, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr.Ray Huntley officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall immediately following the funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
