We regret to announce the death of John Charles Leonard Howie of Port Caledonia on March 17, 2014.
Born in Glace Bay, John was the son of the late Leonard and Florence (Young) Howie.
A graduate of Morrison High School and the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College, he taught school until his retirement in 1993. John held a diploma in administration. He taught school in Marion Bridge (1963-64), Big Glace Bay (1964-65) and Donkin. He was appointed principal of the elementary school in 1974 and in 1987 was appointed principal of the Donkin-Morien Complex, grades primary to 12.
During his career he was involved in many community groups. He was past-president of the board of directors of the Savoy Theatre, past-president of the Industrial Cape Breton Council of Churches and past-president of the Canadian Child and Youth Drama Association and served a two year term as national president of Drama Canada.
With a love for painting, John belonged to Art Cape Breton and showed paintings annually with the Sydney IODE Art Show.
John loved music and was organist for several churches since 1962. He volunteered at Taigh Na Mara and the Glace Bay General Hospital playing for services weekly. He was a member of the Cape Breton Chorale since 1978.
John is survived by his sister, Muriel (late Murray) Doncaster of Marion Bridge; nephew, Leonard Doncaster, Marion Bridge; niece, Joan (Donnie) Rankin of Windsor, Ont., and nephew, Kirby (Susan Ellis) MacLeod of New Zealand.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Joan MacLeod and brother-in-law, Robert MacLeod.
At John’s request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date.
Donations in John’s memory may be made to St. Luke’s Anglican Cemetery Fund or Palliative Care.
