Born in New Victoria, he was a son of the late Guy and Tina Ratchford of New Victoria.
He started his working life at Nova Scotia Light and Power, then after a stint at the Sydney Steel Plant, Russell joined the RCAF in 1952 and served in bases across Canada and Europe, attaining the rank of Master Warrant Officer. After retiring in 1981, Russell returned to live in New Victoria where he was involved with the New Waterford Ambulance Service with his son's Paul and Jason for several years.
He had a great sense of humour and was very handy with his tools and liked to putter around the shop. Everyone he met has a 'Russie' story to tell ... usually ‘outstanding.'
