Julia 'Jean' (Gouthro) Brundage, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully March 19, 2014, at Oakwood Terrace surrounded by her family.
Born July 1, 1919, in Gardiner Mines, she was a daughter of the late John 'Jack' and Sarah (Gillis) Gouthro.
She was raised in Gardiner Mines and came to Dartmouth as a young woman working at a clothing store downtown. She met and married Ernest Arthur Brundage and raised four children. She was a woman of many talents — sewing, knitting, crocheting. Most of our clothing as children was made by her loving hands. Many babies have been the recipient of her beautiful sweater sets. Her homemade bread was the envy of all. She was employed for several years at Westphal Sobeys then at Westphal Pharmacy. She took great pride in her column for the Dartmouth Free Press.
She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Women’s League. Julia had strong faith which she instilled in her children.
She is survived by sons, Graham (Judy) and Barry; daughter, Joan Spicer (David) — Mom’s favourite son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Judy (wife of late Stephen Brundage); grandchildren, Cheryl (Todd), Craig, Alana, Jan (Dave), Chandran, Ceilidh (Kevin), Liam (Tia), Braedon, Tylor, Troy and Darrin (Ashley); great-grandchildren who affectionately call her Gigi, Noah, Abigail, Nicholas, Nathan, Lilly and Josie; youngest sister, Edna and her brother, John. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and special nephew, Father Arthur Gouthro.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest, her youngest son, Stephen, sisters, Margaret, Catherine, Annie-Mae and Mary, brothers, Alec and Daniel.
We wish to express our sincere gratitude to the incredible staff we have encountered in Julia’s journey with us during her stay at Oakwood Terrace.
