Gordon Walter Hardy of Ingonish passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
He was the son of the late Levi and Mary Chatfield (Canning) Hardy. Gordon was the last surviving member of the SS Rose Castle torpedoed in the Strait of Belle Isle, NFLD. He later enlisted in the Army.
He was a man who believed in volunteering for the good of the community, was a founding member of Ingonish Volunteer Fire Dept., Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 105, lifetime member of Cabot Trail Lions Club, and Cape Breton Naval Veterans Assoc. In his early years, he was a lobster fisherman, sub forest ranger with DNR, Commissionaires and retired from Parks Canada. Gordon’s keen interest in politics sparked many a debate. He was a man with a strong work ethic and mowed his own lawn til the age of 88. He loved visitors and all were welcomed in their home.
Surviving are his wife Stella (Roper); son Bruce, Edmonton; daughter Donna Lynn (Eric) MacLean, Ingonish; granddaughter Raeann Hardy (Karl Verner), Eastern Passage; brothers, Wilfred, Sydney; Richard, Toronto; Gerald (Barb), Vancouver; special sisters-in-law Winnie and Norma, Sydney, special niece Claudia (John Whitty), Port Hawkesbury, along with many nieces and nephews.
Gordon was predeceased by brothers Claude and Will (WW II), Harold (Sam); sisters Gladys MacDonald, Lizzie MacLeod, Elsie Cake and Mabel MacDougall.
Visitation for the late Mr. Hardy will take place from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, March 23 at the Ingonish Funeral Home. Funeral service will take place Monday, March 24 at 11 a.m. in St. John’s Anglican Church, Ingonish with Rev. Carolyn Sharp officiating. Interment at a later date.
