It is with sad and heavy hearts that we announce the death of Sarah ‘Sadie’ MacVarish, 94 on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney where she has been a resident since 2006.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late John and Flora (MacDougall) MacVarish. Sadie a long time resident of Baker Street, New Waterford was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Sadie received her early education in New Waterford. She later graduated from the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College in Truro, N.S. and began her teaching career in a one room school house in the fishing village of Bateston, Cape Breton. She returned to New Waterford where she was a well known teacher at St. Agnes School for 41 years, retiring in 1982. Her dedication to the teaching profession along with her passion for teaching inspired two of her nieces along with a great niece to enter into the teaching profession. Sadie was an active member of her community and a member of St. Agnes Parish C.W.L. for many years.
Sadie is survived by nieces, Elaine (Stan Grandy), Halifax, Linda (John Catoul), Victoria Mines, Susan (Sam Moran), Judique, Elizabeth (Lorne Grabher), Dartmouth; nephews, Ian (Lina) MacMullin, Moncton, John LeBlanc, Calgary, AB, Alfred ‘Alfie’ LeBlanc, New Victoria, Donald ‘Donnie’ and Ronald ‘Ronnie’ MacMullin, New Waterford along with many great nieces and great nephews.
Besides her parents, Sadie was predeceased by brothers, Donald, Hugh ‘Toddy’, Ronald ‘Rannie’; sisters, Kay MacMullin and Agnes LeBlanc.
A woman of strong faith, generosity and courage, she was known for her wise counsel and quick but dry wit. Our Aunt Sadie was a very hospitable, welcoming presence in our lives. We will miss her support and encouragement.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford, Nova Scotia.
At Sadie’s request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley is Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard Church followed by interment in St. Agnes Cemetery. All are invited to join the family at St. Leonard’s Hall for a reception.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sadie’s memory to a charity of choice.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
