BETHUNE, JOHN "JACK" HARVEY - It is with sadness that the family wishes to report the passing of Jack Bethune on March 22, 2014 at Rothesay, NB. Born in Sydney, NS on Oct. 8, 1938, Jack was the son of the late Harvey and Annie (Gaudet) Bethune. He attended Sydney Academy, St. Francis Xavier University, NS Tech, and Central Michigan University. Jack attended university on an ROTP Scholarship and after graduating in Chemical Engineering he became a Flying Instructor in the RCAF. Leaving the Air Force in 1964, he worked in Pulp and Paper for 28 years assuming various managerial positions in Research and Production for CIP, its successor companies, and Irving Paper. In later years he joined the Faculty of Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology where he functioned as professor and coordinator of the Pulp & Paper Programs, and conducted distance education training and industrial training. He wrote many of the training manuals and study guides used by the college and its industry clients. He continued to teach through distance education for many years after retirement. Married to the love of his life, Marion (MacLeod) Bethune for 52 years, Jack is survived by his wife; two sons, Scott (Denise) in Stockton, CA, and Jim (Kathy) in Halifax, NS; six grandchildren, Jody (Colin) Sampson, Stephanie, Hailey, Alex, Kelsey and Jillian; one great-granddaughter, Brooklynn, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by one brother Robert, and is survived by sister Bonnie (Florida) and brother Terrance (Hamilton). In his younger years Jack functioned as Secretary of the Red Cross, Secretary Treasurer of the Boy Scouts Group Committee and Akela, President of the Hawkesbury Curling Club and Vice-President of Hawkesbury Golf and Curling Limited. For many years he was an active member of OLPH Choir, and several other Church choirs.
As per Jack's request, no visitation will be held. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 31 Gondola Point Road, Rothesay, on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at 11:00 AM. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, Romero House or a charity of the donor's choice.
