The family of Ray Musgrave, regret to announce his death, which occurred on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. His death happened as a result of complications of liver disease.
Ray was born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Leonard and Martha (Crews) Musgrave.
Ray was a resident of North Sydney for most of his life and also spent a great deal of his childhood living in Frenchvale. Ray was a proud graduate of Riverview High School, class of 65. He attended Xavier Junior College in Sydney and then the School of Social Work in Halifax for his initial social work education. He later completed his bachelor of social work degree at the University of Regina in 1976 and his master of social work at Dalhousie University in 1998. Ray was a social worker for 42 years and he showed great passion and pride in this. He was involved in caring for an incalculable amount of people in Cape Breton for decades through Family Services of Nova Scotia, the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Emergency Crisis Team and through his private practice.
Ray had a great passion for life matched only by his love of family and friends. He greatly enjoyed storytelling, whether telling his own stories or listening to those of others. He was known for his easy-going nature and infectious laugh. He loved classic cars and history.
Ray had become deeply involved with St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in recent years. He was involved with Parish Council and was much loved within the church. He was also incredibly devoted to the Rotary Club of North Sydney.
Ray was predeceased by his wife Phyllis (Nash) Musgrave, who recently passed away in January of 2014.
Ray is survived by their three sons, Stuart (Erin), Moncton, David (Anne), Oshawa, and Stephen (Michelle), Toronto, also surviving is his sisters, Gertie (Ron) Cumming, Kingston, Ont., Ollie (Bud) Atkinson, Edmonton Alta., Bev (David) Aker, Sydney Mines, Gwen (Ernie) O’Neill, Frenchvale, Shirley Stamper, Scotch Lake, Anne (Tommy) LeBlanc, Big Bras d’Or, Cindy (John) Britten, Sydney; his brothers, Wayne (Gloria), Balls Creek, Gary (Paulette), St. Thomas, Ont., Lou (the late Lois), Scarborough, Ont., Gordie (Susan), New Glasgow, Joe (Marguerite), Frenchvale; by his brothers-in-law, Walter (the late Minnie) Nash, Innisfil, Ont., Graham (Marie) Nash, Pembroke, Ont.; sister-in-law, Mabel Musgrave.
Besides his wife Phyllis, Ray was predeceased by his parents, Leonard Musgrave in 1978 and Martha (Crews) Musgrave in 1991, by his brother, Russell Musgrave, his sister, Lenna (Brian) MacDougall, sister-in-law, Carol (Arnie) Roach and his father and mother-in-law, Jack and Ruth (Lamey) Nash.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Kirkpatrick and his staff for the wonderful care provided to Ray during his years of illness. Special thanks to the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the Northside General Hospital for the care provided in Ray’s years of illness. Deepest gratitude goes to Rev. Carl Fraser and Rev. Gloria McClure-Fraser for their support and friendship to Ray in recent years.
Visitation for Ray will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the 3M campaign at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church or the Canadian Liver Foundation.
