Jean MacKENZIE

March 20, 1921 – March 27, 2014
PICTOU, NS – Doris Jean MacKenzie, Thursday, March 27, Pictou lost a vivacious citizen. Jean’s final challenge in life was a battle with bowel cancer which she vigorously fought.
The daughter of the late William and Ella (MacKenzie) MacKinnon, Jean was predeceased by her parents; sister, Verna in infancy; sister, Elizabeth Williamson; and husband, Roy ‘Cookie’ MacKenzie.
Jean is survived by sister, Jennie MacNeil; niece, Judy Tarnow and her husband David and family, of Richmond, British Columbia.
Jean is best remembered as co-owner of Western Tire in Pictou, where she and Roy operated their business from 1954-81. Both Jean and Roy were veterans of the Second World War. A proud Legion member, Jean enjoyed her regular visits from Ed Burke. Jean was an avid reader, keen bridge player and a sports enthusiast. Civic affairs were an integral part of Jean’s life. Her interest was evident to the end, always asking “anything new in town”? Jean was grateful for all the visits, phone calls, and treats she received and wanted to extend sincere thanks. Many charitable organizations, children, and animals were beneficiaries of Jean’s generosity. An adherent of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou, Jean was one of the founding members of the original Ladies Auxiliary.
By Jean’s request there will be no service, private scattering of ashes at a later date.
Donations in memory of Jean will be gratefully accepted by fund raising efforts on behalf of Isaac Fraser, 18 month old Congenital Muscular Dystrophy patient, c/o Box 55, Pictou, NS, B0K 1H0, or a charity of choice.
