Fr. Michael Kyte
Born In: Sydney
Passed on: March 27th, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fr. Michael Kyte, O.P., in Chicago, on Thursday, March 27, 2014, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney in 1953, he was the son of the late Arthur and Marie Kyte and the beloved stepson of the late Ruth (MacLean) Kyte.
A graduate of Dalhousie University and Aquinas Institute of Theology, Fr. Michael volunteered with CUSO, in Nigeria, prior to entering the Dominican Order in 1981. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1987 and spent his career in Chicago and Denver, Colorado, where he was the longtime Novice Master. He returned to Chicago and served as Prior of St. Vincent Ferrer Dominican Community in River Forest, Illinois and until most recently he was Prior Priory in Chicago.
A gifted preacher, Fr. Michael had a wide following of friends in Chicago, Denver, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. A testament to his character was evident recently when over 1,000 people attended an Anointing of the Sick and Communal Prayer service for him in Chicago.
Fr. Michael is survived by sisters, Ardith, Coreen (Colin MacDonald), Lois (Bob) Feeney) and brothers, Donald (Debbie), John (Sheila Gallagher), Lorne, Roy (Karen) and adoring nieces, Erin Kyte, Jenna Kyte, Megan Feeney, Jessie MacDonald, Michelle MacDonald, Sarah Gallagher as well as nephews, Andrew Kyte (Tasha), Matthew Kyte, Brett Feeney, Alec Kyte and Paul Gallagher as well as grandnephew, Kieran Kyte and grandniece and namesake, Micah Kyte.
The Rite of Christian Burial will take place at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in River Forest, Illinois, on Tuesday, April 1, where Fr. Michael was associate pastor for the past seven years. Interment will take place at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plains, Illinois.
