KEITH W. SAMPSON
1941 – 2014
Keith succumbed to multiple cancers Thursday, March 27, 2014. He apprenticed as an electrician with Harvey Weir after high school. He also attended University of Saskatchewan and taught in Kitimat, BC before joining Saskatchewan Penitentiary staff. He was respected by both staff members and inmates, ending his career as Chief Hostage Negotiator and Chief of Education. Many men owe their lives to Keith, either directly or indirectly. He and Bill Peet developed the protocol for hostage negotiation, adopted by Corrections Canada. They taught hostage negotiation in penitentiaries and correctional institutions (formerly called jails) for several years. His mother, Annie Sutherland Sampson, was a well-known women’s hockey player, pictured in the Sports Hall of Fame in Prince Albert. Annie also coached ball. His father Bill was a semi-pro pitcher with the Bohemians. Keith was a good ball and hockey player, carded by the New York Rangers. For his family, he gave time, unconditional love and support for every endeavor. He is deeply mourned by his wife of 27 years, Connie, and his sons Curtis, Joey, Michael, Rob Sampson and Joel Pedersen, as well as his grandchildren Alexis, Zack, Max, Neave, Ali, Gracen and twins Owen and Vanessa. He was predeceased by his parents, uncles and aunts Harvey and Ida Weir, Albert and Margaret Vanderkratch and George and Pauline Sutherland. He is survived by cousins Sandra, Janie and Pat Weir, daughters of Harvey and Ida, Ruth, Joyce and Linda, daughters of Margaret and Albert, Rick, Doug, Roland, Peggy, Lori, Penny, Cathy, Tom, Lynnelle, John and Chris, children of George and Pauline Sutherland, Gary and Connie Boniface. Longtime friends Mike and Bunny Kvasnak, Bryan and Gloria Maier, Bill and Joanne Saggs, Velma Grunsky, Dale and Laurie Ksyniuk, Willie and Debbie Dorton, and the ‘cuz’ Sandra, Jane and Pat, helped in every way possible. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Royal University Hospital fund in appreciation of the wonderful care Keith received from the doctors and nurses of the ICU. They saved his life. A Graveside service of cremated remains will take place in the Garden of Christus, Prince Albert Memorial Gardens at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 3, followed by a celebration of his life at St. Albans Cathedral Hall, 1405 Bishop McLean Crescent.
