It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Kathryn 'Lovey' Smith, 72 surrounded by her loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Friday, April 4, 2014 after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Born in St. Peter's, she was the daughter of the late John Alex and Jessie Mae (Morrison) MacDonald.
Lovey's greatest passion in life was her devotion to her family. Her true pride and joy was her pillar of strength, Bill, her husband of 48 years. Her three daughters were the love in her heart and her five grandsons were the sparkle in her eye.
Lovey was a passionate educator. Throughout her career, she touched the lives of many students and staff alike. Her passion for combining learning with fun was evident daily.
Lovey fought a courageous battle for eight years with a smile on her face with never a complaint. Her strength, love and bravery were a testament to her spirit for life. She was a caring soul who loved to help others whether it be a smile, a kind word or a cup of tea and a slice of her homemade pie.
Survived by her husband James 'Bill' Smith, Sydney; daughters, Melanie (Brad) Balmas, Sydney, Kathy (John) DiMichele, Philadelphia and Natalie Smith, Halifax; grandsons, Brett, Mitchell and Kenzie Balmas and Giovanni and Carlo DiMichele; sisters, Diane (Cecil) Cogswell, Evanston, Rita (Lin) Carter, Sampsonville and Joyce (Dwight) Carter, St. Peter's; brothers, John Dan (Mary) MacDonald and Robert (Julie) MacDonald, St. Peter's.
Also left to mourn Lovey's passing are her dear friends, Pauline Bain, Barbara McNamara, Monica Hollohan and Cathy Barrington.
Lovey was predeceased by sister, Margaret; brother, Douglas and nephew, Danny.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the Cape Breton Cancer and Palliative Care units at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the years of exceptional care provided to Lovey.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8 at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9 at St. Joseph’s Church, Sydney. Rev. Bill Burke will officiate.
Donations in Lovey’s memory may be made to the cancer unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
