Dr. Creighton Marney

Dr. Creighton Edgar Marney born January 17, 1922 in Amherst passed away peacefully in the early hours on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at High-Crest Nursing Home (Veteran’s Wing) in Springhill, NS.
He was a son of the late Claude H. and Grace (Cole) Marney.
Creighton completed his early education in Amherst and later joined the R.C.A.F. and served at a base in Prince George, B.C. during the Second World War. On discharge, he attended Acadia University, as well as the College of Optometry at the University of Toronto. He subsequently received his Doctor of Optometry from the University of Waterloo.
Creighton was a practicing Optometrist in Amherst for 35 years in addition to being the Optometrist for the local penitentiaries in Springhill and Dorchester.
Always community minded, Creighton was a dedicated member of Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church, where he served a term on the Board of Stewards. He also served on the boards of Highland View Hospital and Cumberland County Family and Children Services.
An accomplished bridge player, Creighton assisted in the formation of the Amherst Duplicate Bridge Club. He was also a very avid golfer and a longtime member of the Amherst Golf and Country Club as well as a member of the Amherst Curling Club. Creighton also belonged to the Cumberland Wing of the R.C.A.F.
Creighton spent many happy winters at his Florida home in Pinellas Park following his retirement.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Florence (Marshe); sons, Graeme (Brian MacDonald) and Stuart (Kelly Gibson); three step grandchildren, Katherine Gibson, Chelsea (Joseph) Kendal and Megan Gibson; sister, Ruth Dow; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, Creighton was predeceased by brothers, Everett and Lawrence; sisters, Doris Johnston and Erma Simmons.
The funeral service will be celebrated on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. from Trinity – St. Stephen’s United Church, Amherst with Rev. Victor MacLeod officiating. Reception will follow in Burgess hall. Interment will take place at a later date in the Amherst Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Creighton’s memory may be made to the Trinity – St. Stephen’s United Church, The Cumberland Regional Health Care Foundation or the charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, Amherst (667-9906).
