With broken hearts, we the family regret to announce the passing of our dear son, grandson and brother, Matt Somerton of Glace Bay. Matt passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the QE II Hospital, Halifax, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Terry Somerton and Carol Ann Comer Somerton, both of Glace Bay.
Matt was a welder by trade and a member of CUPW Breton Local #682 and worked for companies on job sites throughout Canada. He enjoyed his trade and made many good friends across the country. Matt truly loved the outdoors, whether it be on his 4x4 or swimming at Mira Gut. In his earlier years he enjoyed hockey. He had a passion for boxing and was a member at Ring 73. His favourite pastime was playing video games with his nephews. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Matt knows of his love for his dog “Tazor” they had an exceptional bond and were inseparable. Matt will be remembered by all as a big kind-hearted person, with a great personality who would do anything for anyone.
Matt will be sadly missed by his loving parents, mom Carol Ann Comer Somerton; father Terry Somerton (Shauna Matheson Rudderham); sister Chelsea; brother Jeffery (Angela Taylor), all of Glace Bay; stepbrother Brett Rudderham, stepsister Samantha Rudderham, both of Alberta. He will also be missed by his loving grandparents, Gerald and Bev Somerton, niece and nephews, Kiley, Landan and Ryder who he adored — he loved and spoiled them like they were his own. Also left to mourn his passing are his aunts, uncles , cousins and numerous friends.
Matt was predeceased by grandparents, John Edward and Mary Rodenia 'Roy' Comer and grandmother Joan Somerton.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Thursday, at Immaculate Conception Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Cremation will follow with interment in Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations in Matt’s memory may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation or the IWK Hospital.
