Marian Leola Hamilton

The death of Marian Leola Hamilton, 85, formerly of Sackville, NB, and Brigetown, NS, occurred on Wednesday March 19, 2014. Born in Morristown, NS, Marian, the widow of the late Dr. William B. Hamilton, was a daughter of the late Floyd and Sadie (MacNeill) Banks.
A graduate of the Nova Scotia Provincial Normal College, Acadia University (B.A.) and Mount Allison University (B.Ed.), Marian held teaching positions at the Elementary and High School levels in Dartmouth, NS, Sussex and Moncton, NB and London, ON. Following study at Andover-Newton Theological School, Newton Centre, Massachusetts, she served as Girls Work Secretary with the Ontario Council of Christian Education. Later, she was employed as a social worker with the Family Service Bureau, London, Ontario.
In retirement, her interest in art led her to qualify as an artist-teacher with the International Porcelain Artists and Teachers Inc. Her work has been exhibited in a number of galleries throughout the Maritimes.
Community volunteering included the Canadian Federation of University Women, where she served on the national executive as Vice-President (Atlantic) from 1984-1991. She was a member of the IODE J.W. Logan Chapter in Halifax, and the Lord Sackville Chapter. Further volunteer interests involved the Sackville Art Association, Canadian Bible Society and the Board of the VON in Sackville.
Marian recently moved to Edmonton to be close to Brian, Keyna and grandchildren Raphael (Rafe) and Bethany (Beth). She became a cherished member of the seniors' community at Exquisicare-Westcliff Place in Edmonton. She especially enjoyed the many guest visitors who inspired her creativity. She was described as "brightening up the room." Staff and fellow residents expressed how much she will be missed.
Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Dr. William B. Hamilton and her brothers Rodney and Emerson.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge Street, Sackville, NB (506-364-1300). A service in Marian’s memory will be held from the Mount Allison University Chapel, Sackville, on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 11 am. Interment to follow in the Sackville Cemetery.
At Marian’s request, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the CFUW Charitable Trust, 1007-28 Elizabeth St. North, Mississauga, ON.
