Passed on: April 8th, 2014
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Leonard Raymond 'Len' Bailey at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in New Waterford, N.S. on Jan. 28, 1938, Len was the youngest son of the late Hugh and Mary (Butler) Bailey.
Len leaves to mourn his dear wife of 35 years, Colleen (Shea) Bailey; his two daughters, Nancy Pastuck (Donald) and Charlene Villa (Robert); his son, Kevin (Shelly) and two stepsons, Gary (Brenda) and Trevor (Tracy) in Ontario. He is survived by grandchildren, Gregory (Samantha), Danny, Andrew, Kevin (Kendra), Kyle, Travis (Francis) Jenelle (Jay), Brad, Keith, Kyra and Alex. He is also survived by the love of his life - two little beautiful great-grandsons, Ashten Pastuck and baby Lucas Bailey.
Also surviving are a brother, Ernest (Helen) and sisters-in-law, Theresa Bailey and Francis Bailey. He also leaves many nieces and nephews, especially his nephew, Fred Bailey, who visited every Sunday and was so very helpful to his Uncle Len.
Besides his parents, Len was predeceased by his former wife, Dorothy (Pheifer) Bailey and by a beautiful daughter-in-law, Lucy (Webb) Bailey. Len was also predeceased by three brothers, Colin, John and Jack and three sisters, Phyllis, Clara and Elizabeth; also by a dear sister-in-law, Annie Bailey.
Len was a lover of animals and at one time was a groom at Tartan Downs Raceway. He was always bringing home a cat from the barns and loved every one of them. He was a very good natured man and loved children and animals with a passion. Since Len was bedridden for a number of years, his little Portuguese Water Dog Maggie "Boo" would lay by his bedside for hours every day.
Len was a certified auto mechanic and body man and once had his own business "Bailey's Auto Body Shop" in New Waterford. He was extremely fussy and could make an old car look brand new. He was a very hard worker and worked many hours in his garage. He was also a mechanic at Breton Toyota in Sydney for the last 10 years he was able to work.
At Len's request, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. There will be no visitation as Len's wish was to have a small graveside service with immediate family members only at a later date.
My family and I would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Palliative Care Unit of the Regional Hospital for the excellent care they gave Len. It was greatly appreciated.
In honour of Len's memory, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the Sydney SPCA.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
Len will be forever missed by his wife Colleen and his loving family.
