Mary Large

Mary Rosamond (Gifford) Large passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 10, 2014, surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her husband Ellsworth F. Large. Mary leaves her daughter, Linda (Barrie) Black, Halifax and grandchildren Lyndsay, New York City and Simon Black, Halifax, as well as her twin brothers Douglas Gifford and Donald (Joan) Gifford, Stittsville, Ontario and her five grandnieces and nephews. Mary was born in Greenbush, Ontario, on October 2, 1917. In 1941 she graduated from The Ottawa Civic Hospital with her nursing degree and became a respected and admired member of their staff. During the war Mary took an active role heading up the Red Cross blood drives in eastern Ontario and NY State. She was very proud of the part she contributed to the war effort. She devoted her life to her family, friends and community. Mary will be remembered for her warmth, compassion, generosity of spirit and her inner glow that touched all those fortunate enough to know her. She loved unconditionally, exuded kindness in everything she did and had a positive outlook on life that inspired others … to Mary the glass was always half full. Mary will be greatly missed but her memory and amazing spirit will live on. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the Stroke Unit 8.1 at the QE11 for their caring and compassion. A service and celebration of Mary's life will take place at the First Baptist Church on Oxford Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia on Friday, May 9, at 2 p.m. with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Laing House, 1225 Barrington St., Halifax, N.S. (lainghouse.org) or the N.S. Heart and Stroke Association.
