Passed reluctantly, yet peacefully away at home in the presence of his loving family on April 16, 2014. John Cotter Furlong at the age of 63. In his chosen profession of journalism, John stands as a reminder to all that you can be tough and still be respected. John practised his art with integrity but also came wonderfully equipped with an ability to separate "the wheat from the chaff". He spent his life in journalism sifting through layers of information, misinformation, and opinions to get at the truth. Above all, John sought to represent the interests of his readers, or listeners, or viewers. John is pre-deceased by his daughter, Genevieve, and his wife Maureen. Leaving to mourn his wife, Gerry Marshall; his children, Jim (Moe), Sarah (Chris) and Matthew (Kristin); his brother Jim (Judy, Michael, John, Patrick), step-children, Susan (David), Julie, Evan (Brittney) Smith; Mother-in-law, Theresa, the Marshall family, Vickie, the Amminsons and the Hamiltons; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a huge collection of friends, co-workers, fishermen and listeners. At John's request, cremation has taken place. Visitation was held at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Rd, on Thursday from 5pm-9pm and Friday from 12 noon - 4 pm and 7 pm - 9pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 1 pm from Mary Queen of Peace Church. No flowers by request. Donations to the Hub or the Vera Perlin Society gratefully accepted.
