Sister Margaret 'Peggy' MacDonald, (Ann Christine), 87, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, N.S. on April 29, 2014.
Born in Sydney, N.S., she was a daughter of Hugh and Christina (MacNeil) MacDonald. She entered the Sisters of Charity - Halifax on Sept. 8, 1949 and made her final vows on Aug. 15, 1958. She earned an R.N. in 1968 from the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing and later received a certificate for a course in Tropical Diseases from the International Health Institute in Toronto, Ont. in 1974. She began her ministry in music education in 1952 and continued until 1968 and served in Woodside, N.Y.; Reserve, N.S.; and Halifax, N.S. From 1974 until her return to Canada in 2008, Sister Peggy ministered in public health work in Bani, Dominican Republic.
During that interim, she took care of her sister, Norma, in Hawaii for a year and also worked at the Home of the Guardian Angel in Halifax for a year. Upon her return to Halifax, Sister Peggy resided in DePaul Hall for a short time and then moved to Caritas Residence, where she remained until her death.
She is survived by her brothers, John, Sydney and Daniel, East Bay; by her sister-in-law, Florence, Sydney and by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Jean MacNeil, Norma Strok, Beverly MacDonald, Sister Anne Marie MacDonald and by her brothers, Donald, Hugh and Charles.
The body will be in Caritas Residence on Sunday, May 4, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the prayer service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 5, at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, N.S.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
