Ruth Vivian (King) Pilgrim

Ruth Vivian (King) Pilgrim

On Wednesday, April 23, Ruth Vivian (King) Pilgrim passed peacefully away at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony. Ruth was born in Harry’s Harbour, Green Bay, to Elihu and Gladys King. She had three sisters, Jeanette, Hazel, and Phyllis and one brother Morris. When her father died, she was three years old. Her mother then married John Cull who Ruth always said was good to them. Her baby sister Mary was soon born. She spent her childhood in Ireland Bight, and loved it still into her last days. She became a school teacher at the age of 18, taught school in Locke’s Cove, then found herself in another Bight as a teacher. It was while teaching in St. Anthony Bight that she met Clarence Pilgrim. They married and built a life that brought joy, struggle, hope and loss. In 1978 she buried her youngest child Sheldon, and in 1996 she buried her sweet husband. Ruth is survived by her children Patsy (Alonzo), Kevin (Veronica), Keith (Yvonne), Lloyd (Jackie), and Sharon (Bob); grandchildren Renee, Rhonda (Chris) Lonnie (Karen), Christa (Trevor), Nicholas, Amanda (Jake), Sheldon (Robbi-Lynn), Alex (Kristen), Kristopher, Victoria (Cory), and Lucas, and great-granddaughter Kalee. Ruth is also held in the hearts of her surviving siblings, Phyllis, Morris and Mary and in many other extended family across Newfoundland, in pockets of Labrador, across Canada and into the United States. Ruth enjoyed her family and friends, loved to travel and into the end of her days was a lover of nature, birds, butterflies, flowers and the rare hummingbird that flew through the trees outside her window. As she prepared to go she said she was about to go on a journey and didn’t even need to pack a suitcase. Her family is certain that her son and husband are waiting for her. She will be missed and ever loved. Visitation was held at the United Church in St. Anthony Bight, from where the funeral service took place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 with Rev. John M. McGonigle officiating. Burial followed in the St. Anthony Bight Community Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Siobhan Mauger, funeral director.
