Murray Smith
SMITH, MURRAY C - Murray C. Smith, 73, of Riverview, with loving family members at his side, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Friday, May 30, 2014. Born in Sunny Brae, he was the son of Gladys (Gray) Smith and the late Gordon S. Smith. Murray was retired from VIA Rail with 34 ½ years’ service and was a Sales & Service Representative for Brunswick Fyr & Safety for approximately 35 years. He was a former Volunteer for Saint John Ambulance (1960 – 1990); a member of the Moncton Wesleyan Church where he earned the nickname “Balcony Boy” (for ushering in the balcony), a Church Trustee and he served his church in various other capacities including the Moncton Christian Academy and volunteering with the Wesleyan Seniors Bus Tours (videotaping). He received the “Serving Brothers Award” in Ottawa from past Governor General Jules Léger (his last official duty) for having 10,000 volunteer hours. In addition to his mother, Gladys, Murray will be sadly missed by his wife of over 50 years, Irene L. (MacRae) Smith of Moncton; daughters, Carol Smith (Phil) of Porters Lake, NS and Cheryl Smith of Dieppe; son, Chris (Nicole) of Riverview; grandchildren, Jillian, Aaron, Nicholas, Kysha and Ryan; brother, Richard (Marie) of Riverview; special niece, Laura; several other nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his grandparents, the late Rev. W. Steadman and Ethel Smith.
Visitation at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A service celebrating Murray’s life will be held at The Moncton Wesleyan Church Life Centre on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 1:30 pm with Rev. Dr. L. Buckingham officiating. Reception in the Church Atrium following the service. Interment, Fair Haven Memorial Gardens.
